Notes

We walked the Lycian Way in October (Autumn) 2002.  These notes reflect our experiences only.  Others might find no problems at all where we were totally lost!  Likewise others could have difficulty where we had none.

These notes may be out of date now.  Please refer to Kate Clow's Updates for the latest information.

For the most part, way marking was excellent and we got better at finding the way as we progressed.  A useful technique when navigation became difficult was for one person to stay at the last mark while the other searched for the next.  GPS tracks are now available!

Our aim in making these notes is to assist those who follow us to thoroughly enjoy a superb long distance walk in a magnificent country.  We hope our experience will make it just a little easier.

KOZAGACI

Some way marks missing – very confusing.

FARALYA

No shop at Faralya.  We had a take away lunch prepared at our pension (Georgehouse).  Great, and it lasted us for three meals!

KABAK

We could not find the path down to the beach after Mama's restaurant, nor could we find much of the optional walk path.  A beekeeper took us up the hill and pointed us in the right direction to re-join the path.

ALINCA

Couldn't find the start of the path out of Alinca, so just followed the road.

BOGAZICI

The shop is at the far end of Bogazici, just before the stream.  There is nothing to indicate "shop" – it is next to the teahouse, ask around for thebakkal.  Basic supplies only.  The shopkeeper's wife allowed us to sleep above the store and provided dinner and breakfast (we paid her 15m).

PASS to GAVURAGILI

Couldn't find the goat hut and had to hunt for the tractor track.

No water in cistern, but villagers directed us to a spring.

PYDNAI

Road sign to Letoon is broken off.

Hard to find the trail through (inside) the ruins at Pydnai, but the general direction is fairly obvious.

BRIDGE to JUNCTION

No markings after 1st junction.  Maybe we should have turned there, but continued straight-ahead then via sand dunes heading towards the mosque at Letoon.

INPINAR SPRING

Update (Someone couldn't find Inpinar spring. It's on the right hand valley side, up-stream from the Roman bridge, and the water runs downhill from it (obviously!).

The way marks do not go to the springs, but uphill onto the next section. The path upstream to the springs was very overgrown with Oleander bushes and the "overhanging rock" was not visible until we got there.

Great overnight spot under pine trees uphill from the springs.

UZUMLU

No markings on tractor track turn off, and none on tractor track into Uzumlu.  Very overgrown, very difficult, no track at all in places.  Probably best just to follow the road to the mosque and pick up the way marks there. Update (After the tractor track, the route runs horizontally through the centre of Uzumlu village, above and parallel with the tarmac road, to join a road leading upwards (SE) from the main village mosque. It's been obliterated in part, so aim for the mosque and follow the road uphill.)

After PATARA

We missed the "stone built isolated house with a marble terrace" and followed a graded road and, by chance, picked up the way marks.

HILLTOP to HUSEYIN'S COTTAGE

Down from the hilltop near the charcoal ring, some way marks chipped off the rocks – appears deliberate vandalism.

This section took us 2 hrs 15 minutes (instead of 1 hour 15 minutes).  We could not find any water at Huseyin's Cottage.

STEPPING STONES

The book says Gokceoren to Phellos 15 klms, but the sign at the steeping stones says Gokceoren 8 klms, Phellos 15 klms (ie total 23 klms).  Felt like 23 klms!

PHELLOS

Turn off to the right about 50 meters before the top of the ridge, about 20 meters after a LH bend in the road.  However, it is better to continue to the top of the ridge and climb up a steep graded firebreak to the right for a birds-eye view of Phellos.  Then go back down to the Phellos track which is more easily located going down.  Very impressed with Phellos!

PHELLOS to KAS

Don't go down behind the mosque, the turn off is the next left (about 800 meters further -?).

After the last three houses, very few (if any) way markings until the powerlines.  Follow the Update (The cottages are the LAST cottages. The route forks 5 mins AFTER the pylon line. The general line is this: the route first runs on the right / west slope of Cukuryayla (the low-lying area), but then switches sides to the east, goes through a patch of scrub [this needs remarking] and joins a major track running level on the east slope.), but if in doubt head towards a rock well near a dam on the LH side of a flat area then go behind a single tree to pick up a distinct grade 2 path and follow it uphill to the dip between the hills.

LIMAN AGIZI to APOLLONIA

Water at Fakdere and Kali Tepesi (only).  Plenty of good quality water but purified as a precaution.  Water at well on Kalici Road looked undrinkable.

This section was HOT – some rocks too hot to touch.  We used 4 litre water containers each (and we were acclimatised).

UPPER CASTLE to BOGAZCIK ROAD

"As it crests …" – a few very faint way marks, but follow the road which will lead to a Tee junction (the Bogazcik Road) and turn left.

Missed Apollonia.  There was no clear way to the top (or explanation).  Is it scrambling?

Out of ZEYTIN

Some marks missing/confusing.

After a well and terraces walked on a new road (which looks like it continues for miles).  Couldn't find a path down to Alkalasi, but just cut down off the road at the first opportunity.

ALKALASI

Well water a bit dirty, but OK.  We sterilised it.

After Alkalasi, the new road has destroyed some way marks.  Head N/NE until you hit the road and follow it.  You pass a ruined wall/building (possibly Roman) with square cut blocks.  Continue for about 50 meters to an obvious grade 2 path left.  The marks are about every 50 meters.  The odd shaped cistern is about 20 minutes from the road.  We lost the way in the rocky scree, but found the 2 huge boulders OK.

Bussed it.  Looked like a long, hot and boring walk along a four-lane highway!

KARAOZ

Cafes on the beach at Karaoz were closed (looked permanent).  There is a shop and teahouse in the village.  We saw a sign Cingenem Pension/Bar/Restaurant phone 8867071, but did not investigate.

Not much at Karaoz.  The lighthouse overnight was a highlight of the walk. Don't rely on water at the lighthouse.

ADRASAN

We thought Adrasan was a delightful little place.  Didn't see a rubbish dump, but followed the dirt road all the way to the beach.  Blue Bay pension was an OK place to stay – right on the beach.

There are two tarmac roads leaving Adrasan.  Do not take the one near the Blue Bay Pension – go further north on the beach road.

Way marks VERY faint at river crossing, and missing on the other side. Follow Update until the single olive tree behind the glass houses is located(The stream crossing is at least a km from the signpost [not a few hundred metres], and there are houses on the opposite bank. Cross diagonally and take the second (NE) major dirt road thru' the greenhouses and houses. Then strike across a field aiming straight into the valley ahead (if there is wheat you will have to walk round) and find the old way marking near the stream.) From then on it's OK.

New way from the old ladies house through the pine forest is very attractive.

TAHTALI

We missed the turn off point from the route to Tahtali Dagi completely. Where do you start looking?  Other descending day trekkers pointed us in the right direction.  It starts in a saddle.

There are cairns, widely spaced, leading to a secondary peak to the left of Tahtali Dagi.  Bit of a disappointment to arrive at the wrong summit after nearly 2 hours of climbing!  After the scree, there is a saddle - ridge left – saddle right – ridge.  We went astray somewhere here.

The cairns are not that easy to see in the early morning light (we left base camp at 0700), but were more visible mid morning on descent.

Past GEDELME in Update – ("At the crest there is a pylon; from here head north/downhill over rough ground to reach the edge of a field. Turn right along the fence and pick up a forestry track, which continues roughly northeast.  This meets the original route in about 400m, about 50m before the rising left branch upwards.")  Downhill about 20 meters, there is a new 4-strand barbed wire fence.  We crawled through, kept left towards the field over rough cut tree branches, crawled through the new fence again near the corner of the old fence mentioned in the updates to pick up the way marked forest road.

WATER TANK to WHEAT FIELD

After climbing to Grade 6 road, go across (maybe left 50 meters) then keep a cut bramble hedge fence on your left.  We could not find the markers here, but aim for a wooden power pole in a gap to the right of the prominent rocks to the right of Asar Tepe.  This is on the northern edge of the pine forest. Pick up the descending path near the power lines.

No water at spring near camping place, but water from spring further on, also river.

Red arrows everywhere! To Guynok.

GUYNOCK to HISA CANDIR

Well way marked.

No water at either camping place.

Only a trickle of water at 1st cement trough.

Viewing platform at Elmayani springs made a great overnight stop.  Well worth pushing on from Guynok.  It took us 7 hours, including a 1½-hour lunch break.
